This site's purpose

This site was established for the Spring 2010 section of "By Hand: The Art and Politics of Craft," an undergraduate course offered by the American Studies Program and the Department of Folklore & Ethnomusicology at Indiana University, Bloomington. The course explores how handcrafted and independently produced items are used to assert the value of people, roles, beliefs, and ideas. This site provides links to blogs in which students explore the process and personal implications of learning to make something by hand.
